Kinship Center Childhood Trauma Expert Provides Information and Perspectives to a State Legislature

Laura Ornelas, Kinship Center Regional Mental Health Director, provided expert testimony for the Montana State Legislature earlier this month.

The Children, Families, Health and Human Services Interim Committee held a two-day forum on childhood trauma, looking at a review and possible reform in the state's practices and programming in child welfare. The Committee called on Ornelas, a recognized expert, to provide information outlining promising practices around the nation relating to childhood trauma.

"You...primed the pump well; our heads, mine included, were swimming with practices, programs, and possibilities," Legislative Analyst Casey Barrs told Ornelas, who spoke eloquently on how to improve and expand earlier interventions for children under six. (The streaming video of the procedings can be accessed at this link.)

Ornelas was a featured speaker at the February 2012 national conference of the Child Welfare League of America and has spoken to state and national audiences about Kinship Center's clinical models in treating childhood trauma.
